Nõmme Kalju, who had never finished in top 3 in Estonian football top division, achieved silver medal in Meistriliiga’s 2011 season with the historical second place.
Kalju started current season with the new very well-known faces, like Estonian national team players like Alo Bärengrub, Tarmo Neemelo, Kristen Viikmäe and many highly-rated foreign players. All this was the good mix of new players and the ones that had been in the team before to fight for the medal.
In the first full season coaches by Igor Prins, Nõmme Kalju managed to fight for the high places all season long and managed to achieve historical second place, with 24 wins, 8 draws and 5 games lost, that left Kalju behind FC Flora and beyond Narva Trans in the league table. Clubs most notable result in the season was 3:0 victory over Kalju’s main rival Flora in Hiiu stadium, the place where Kalju plays their home matches.
Clubs top scorer was experianced Tarmo Neemelo, who finished the season with 22 goals in his name. Special mentions are also earned by two defenders: Estonian national team player Alo Bärengrub and Estonian national youth team player Ken Kallaste, who both played in all the Nõmme Kalju’s 36 games. Kalju also conceded fewest goals compared to other teams – only 23.
The football club based in Tallinn also participated in UEFA Europa League for the second time in history, where Kalju were defeated 0:2 in home game hosted in A. Le Coq Arena, after goalless draw in Honka, Finland.
Nõmme Kalju had a big ambition this season to bring people to the stadium, as the club organized many big football festivals for the family’s. Biggest event was “Nõmme Kalju Jalgpallifestival”, that brought about 3000 people to the Hiiu stadium from allover the Estonia. There was also many other evetns that lead Kalju biggest number of spectators in the season – 515.
It was only the fourth season at Meistriliiga for Nõmme Kalju, when club managed to achieve that. In next season the club is again aiming to fight for the title and plans to prepare even better. Club is also earned qualification to UEFA Europa League.
